Ferry runs aground in Greece, passengers evacuated safely

ATHENS, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- A ferry with 105 passengers and nine crew members ran aground near an islet in the Euboean Gulf on Tuesday evening, according to Greek authorities.

The ferry was sailing from Nea Stira to Agia Marina when it struck a rocky outcrop and became immobilized. Water began entering the vessel in a controlled manner, and it developed a slight list, officials said.

All passengers were safely evacuated to Nea Stira by Coast Guard vessels and private boats, and no injuries were reported, according to ERT News, the public broadcaster of Greece.

The ministry of shipping said the captain failed to report the incident immediately. Instead, a citizen alerted the authorities, prompting the swift launch of the evacuation.

An investigation into the cause of the grounding is currently underway.
