Mediterranean undersea electrical interconnection project will be completed: Greek FM

ATHENS, March 13 (Xinhua) -- The Great Sea Interconnector, a multi-billion-euro electric transmission project, will be completed, Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis announced on Thursday in Athens.

The project will link Greece to Cyprus and later to Israel.

Steps are being taken to ensure that no obstacles hinder its progress, he said following a meeting in Athens with his Cypriot and Israeli counterparts, respectively.

Last year, Greece and Cyprus signed an agreement to advance their electrical interconnection through an undersea cable as part of the Great Sea Interconnector project, which has an estimated cost of 2.4 billion euros (2.6 billion U.S. dollars).

The European Union has allocated 657 million euros in funding, and the project is expected to be completed by 2029. (1 euro = 1.09 U.S. dollars)
