BELFAST, Northern Ireland: The Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) and Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) will challenge the Northern Ireland Protocol, which has erected barriers to prevent trade between England and parts of the United Kingdom, according to officials.

The protocol, meant to protect the European Union's single market and prevent the creation of a land border in Ireland, has caused disruptions to trade, allege officials.

In fact, a number of British companies have stopped shipping products to Ireland and some supermarkets have reported not being able to receive products.

Officials in the Democratic Unionist Party said senior members would join "other likeminded unionists" in the judicial appeal.

"Neither the Northern Ireland Assembly, the Northern Ireland Executive nor the people of Northern Ireland consented to the Protocol being put in place or the flow of goods from GB to NI being impeded by checks," said DUP leader and Northern Ireland First Minister Arlene Foster, as reported by Reuters.
