JERUSALEM, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- Israeli champions Maccabi Tel Aviv beat Spanish side Real Madrid 86-84 in the 21st round of Euroleague basketball on Thursday evening.
The Israeli hosts notched their 10th victory, while Real remained with 13 wins in 21 games.
The game, played behind closed doors at the Menorah Mivtachim Arena in the coastal city of Tel Aviv, was not canceled despite an ongoing full COVID-19 lockdown in Israel.
Despite the absence of two of their injured stars, Rudy Fernandez and Sergio Llull, Real dominated the first minutes, with an early 11-2 lead, but four successful three-pointers brought Maccabi back to 16-18, in the sixth minute.
Real's 8-0 run helped them to a 31-19 lead, just before the first quarter ended at 33-24.
Shooting guard Tyler Dorsey led Maccabi to an impressive 11-0 run to take the lead, 35-33, and the close game continued, with Real leading 46-45 at halftime.
The third quarter, in which the lead moved between the two teams eight times, ended at 66-63 for Madrid.
Dorsey gave Maccabi a 71-70 lead in the 35th minute, reaching 500 points in the Euroleague, and Scottie Wilbekin made it 76-72, but Real immediately got back to business, 76-76 with 2:55 to go.
With 34 seconds on the clock, Dorsey gave Maccabi an 83-80 lead, Gabriel Deck made it 82-83 from the line, but the unstoppable Dorsey increased the lead to 85-82 with 11 seconds to the buzzer.
Deck made another two from the line, Wilbekin scored only one free throw out of two with 7 seconds to go, but a turnover by Jaycee Carrol secured Maccabi's important win.
Dorsey scored a team-high 30 points, and Othello Hunter added 11 points for Maccabi.
Trey Thompkins led Real scorers with 20 points, and Walter Tavares added 15 more.
Maccabi will play their next game in Turkey against Fenerbahce on January 26, while Real will host Greek side Panathinaikos the next evening.
